As a quilter and quilt shop owner, I know how tricky it can be to carve out time for sewing. Life is busy. Just like you, I’ve got work, family and everything else on my to-do list. Finding time to sew can feel impossible! Still, I’ve learned a few tricks to make the most of my sewing time, and I’d love to share them with you.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need hours of uninterrupted time to make progress on your quilting projects. With a few smart strategies, you can stay productive and keep your creativity flowing.

Here are five quick tips to help you quilt more efficiently and enjoyably, no matter how packed your schedule is!

1. Set Up a Dedicated Quilting Space

One of the biggest time-wasters for busy quilters is setting up and tearing down your quilting area every time you want to sew. Having a dedicated space—even a small one—can make a world of difference.

If you don’t have a spare room to turn into a sewing studio, don’t worry. A folding table in the corner of a room or a rolling cart for your tools can work wonders. The key is to have your sewing machine, fabric, and tools ready to go whenever inspiration strikes.

2. Break Projects into Manageable Chunks

Tackling a whole quilt can feel overwhelming, but tackling it step by step makes it much more manageable. Instead of trying to do everything at once, break your project into smaller tasks:

  • Cut your fabric one day.
  • Piece blocks one at a time.
  • Assemble Rows
  • Add Borders

You’ll be amazed at how quickly short sessions add up! Bonus tip: keep a checklist to track your progress. I love making lists, but the most satisfying part is checking them off! ✔️😊

3. Prep Ahead for Efficiency

Prepping your materials ahead of time can save you loads of time later. Wind a few bobbins, cut all your fabric at once, and organize block pieces in baggies. I also like to keep each project in it’s own plastic storage box.

Keeping your essential tools—like scissors, rotary cutters, and seam rippers—within arm’s reach can also make your quilting time more efficient. When everything is prepped and ready, you can dive right in as soon as you have a spare moment.

4. Choose Quilt Patterns That Fit Your Schedule

Sometimes we want to spend the extra time and make a more complex and artistic quilt. But if your time is limited, look for patterns that are quick and forgiving. Jelly roll quilts, charm pack projects, or panel-based designs can be quicker pieced options. Quilt-as-you-go projects are another fantastic choice because they allow you to work on smaller sections and assemble the finished quilt at the end.

For Example: If you’re looking for inspiration, check out our upcoming Quilt-As-You-Go Christmas Tree Skirt class at Marmie Quilting. It’s perfect for quilters who want a quick but satisfying project this holiday season!

5. Stay Inspired and Connected

Motivation is a powerful tool for busy quilters. When you’re excited about a project, you’re more likely to carve out time for it. One way to stay inspired is to connect with fellow quilters.

  • Join quilting groups on Facebook. (our MQ group is ‘Marmie Makers‘)
  • Sign up for a Block of the Month program (like our 2025 Summer on the Farm quilt!)
  • Set a “quilting date” with friends. (Every Tuesday, Marmie Quilting hosts “Sit & Sew.” It’s a day of encouragement, inspiration and moving ahead on whatever project you are working on).
  • Visiting your local quilt shop is another great way to spark your creativity. At Marmie Quilting, we’re always happy to help you find the perfect fabric, pattern, or tool to get you excited about your next project.

Quilt at Your Own Pace

Remember, quilting should be enjoyable, not stressful. Even if you can only spend a few minutes at a time on your project, you’re still making progress. Celebrate those small wins, and don’t be afraid to adapt your approach to fit your busy life. If you’re making the quilt for a loved one, imagine their pleasure when receiving the quilt!
